-Entertainment Families can spend the day at the Dubai Dolphinarium, the first air-conditioned indoor facility of its kind in the Middle East. Located in Dubai’s Creek Park, the Dolphinarium features a facility that gives visitors an exciting opportunity to swim with dolphins in the habitat pool. Or why not venture into Encounter Zone, an entertainment centre with areas for both children and adults? Situated in the Wafi shopping mall, the centre features a popular Crystal Maze, a horror chamber and fascinating 3D films. Magic Planet, located in Deira City Centre and Mall of the Emirates, is another popular entertainment centre offering cutting-edge rides and facilities for both the young and the young at heart. Or for a day out integrating fun and education for the family, the Zabeel Technology Theme Park gives visitors the chance to learn more about the world of information technology by featuring a series of high-tech interactive displays including educational and recreational exhibits. The park has an IMAX theatre with six-channel surround sound, a panoramic tower and a space maze modelled on the planetary system. -Activities and Sports For families keen on adventure, dune buggying offers a high-octane ride through the desert. Equipped with a full roll cage, safety harnesses, crash helmets and goggles, the 850cc dune buggy is fine-tuned to master the most challenging of dunes. Some tour operators provide day and night dune buggy safaris together with a full range of refreshments. For a bird’s eye view of the desert, visitors can also take to the skies in a hot-air balloon to take in the breathtaking scenery and experience the serenity of the desert. If the balloons give you vertigo and the buggies are just a little bit too close to the surface, then the ideal way to experience the desert is by taking part in one of the specially arranged safaris. Belly-dancing, henna-painting and traditional food is included in the package. But why stick to four wheels? For a truly unforgettable family experience, go by camel. The city also offers families activities to enjoy on snow and ice: Dubai has three ice rinks, located at Al Nasr Leisureland, Hyatt Regency Galleria and the newly opened Dubai Ice Rink at the Dubai Mall. Set within the Mall of the Emirates, Ski Dubai is the first indoor ski resort in the Middle East that allows visitors to experience the ‘Alps in the Desert’ all year. In addition to being one of the world’s longest indoor ski runs, Ski Dubai’s snow park has a family play area, tobogganing hills, twin-rack bobsled racing and a snowball shooting gallery. Sailing and windsurfing are popular around Dubai in the near perfect sailing conditions in the Gulf, with a constant, predictable year round wind, little current or tide and guaranteed warm weather. Windsurfers and dinghies dot the water around Dubai’s sailing clubs and marinas as residents and visitors take advantage of the conditions. Facilities for waterskiing and wake-boarding are readily available in Dubai, and arrangements with professional local operators can be made through most hotels. -Parks One of the first parks to open in Dubai, Safa Park offers a range of sporting facilities, family entertainment and a giant observatory wheel all within acres of lush green rolling lawns. For children and the young at heart, a mini train weaves its way around the park and a mini Traffic Village encompasses a miniature road system complete with cars and traffic signals. Another park that visitors can enjoy is the Creekside Park which offers a variety of family entertainment including Children’s City, the world’s fifth largest ‘infotainment’ facility and a cable car system. Other facilities include an amphitheatre, children’s play area, roller blades and two-seater bicycles for hire. |

-Aquaventure This water playground, a part of one of Dubai’s latest attractions, Atlantis The Palm, consists of extraordinary rides with cascades, tidal waves and rapids. The Ambassador Lagoon is an 11 million-litre marine habitat and underwater exhibit home to several hundred species of marine life, with a viewing panel looking right into the mystical ruins of Atlantis. The Lost Chambers brings the myth of Atlantis to life through a maze of underground tunnels offering underwater views into the boulevards of the ruins of Atlantis. Dolphin Bay is a state-of-the-art dolphin education and conservation centre allowing guests the opportunity to meet and interact with one of the world’s most fascinating animals in an unparalleled facility. -Wild Wadi An exciting, state-of-the-art water park, Wild Wadi forms part of The Jumeirah Beach resort. The park has 24 rides, 16 of which are inter-connected including the Jumeirah Scairah, which is the tallest and fastest freefall slide outside the United States. The Summit Surge uses high-powered water jets to transport people simultaneously uphill, while the Wipeout Flow Rider invites thrill-seekers to surf a perfectly shaped tube wave at almost 3m high. -WonderLand The 18-hectare WonderLand family fun park features a wide range of water attractions and is capable of accommodating up to 8,000 visitors at a time. It also has a water-mist show and water cinema, with videos projected on to a thin film of water plus a full complement of on-land attractions, including an indoor family entertainment centre. -Dubailand With a total of 45 mega projects spanning over three billion square feet and over twice the size of Walt Disney Florida, Dubailand will offer the ultimate theme park experience across culture, science, well-being, retail, sports and family resorts. The park recently opened one of the most spectacular open air stage shows in the world, Jumana, which celebrates Arabia’s rich history and culture. |
